Q: Why are whole flax seeds used in Earth Song® products?
A: First of all, we don’t use refined ingredients in our products. Secondly, we feel that the shell of the seed protects the delicate oils inside the flax seed itself, namely the precious essential fatty acids. The shell also provides both soluble and insoluble fibers, another good reason to eat them whole. If flax seeds are ground before consuming, they should be eaten right away or stored in an airtight container, and kept cool. When buying commercially ground flax check to make sure it was treated with anti-oxidants for protection of the oils against rancidity and/or vacuum sealed.
Q: Is there any sugar in Earth Song® products?
A: No, we do not use refined sugar in our products. Over a year of research was spent on what sweeteners would ultimately be used in our food bars. A balance between nutritional benefits and recipe success was achieved by using a blend of brown rice syrup and grape juice concentrate. The brown rice syrup gives a very slow and steady metabolic release, giving sustained energy. The grape juice concentrate is a form of natural, unrefined fructose which gives quicker energy and allows the fruit flavors from the natural dried fruits in the food bars to sparkle.
A: Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid. "Essential" refers to the fact that it is a substance that the human body cannot manufacture. Therefore, we must consume "essential" nutrients to get them. Omega-3 is one kind of essential fatty acid, containing beneficial nutrients that may improve heart health, lower cholesterol, soothe the digestive system and reduce inflammation. More information can be found in a variety of sources including books, magazines and online. The Omega-3 content of our products comes from organic flax.
Q: What makes Earth Song® products vegan?
A: Our products are vegan because they do not contain any ingredients from animal sources. We do not use butter or eggs, or even honey, since it is processed by bees.
Q: Do any Earth Song® products contain soy?
A: No, although there is one exception. We do not use soy in our products so that people with allergies, or people wishing to avoid soy have a choice. The exception is the chocolate chips in the Cherry-Chocolate Chip bars. They contain a small amount of soy lecithin. If you are allergic to soy, you should probably avoid this flavor.
Q: Does Earth Song® make any wheat-free or gluten-free products?
A: Yes! As of this summer, all products under the Earth SongŪ brand name are wheat and/or gluten-free. All four flavors of the Whole Food Bar line are now wheat-free and both varieties of the Grandpa’s Secret™ Omega-3 Muesli are wheat-free. The wheat-free muesli does not contain any wheat or wheat products. The gluten-free muesli is wheat and gluten-free; it does not contain any wheat, wheat products, oats or other grains that contain gluten.
Q: How do I prepare the muesli?
A: Serving suggestions include but are not limited to the following: Combine 1/2 cup of Omega-3 Muesli with 1/2 cup liquid of your choice (rice milk, lite coconut milk, water, juice, milk, smoothie etc.). To serve hot, heat "milk" or water and pour over muesli. Sweeten to taste. Delicious stirred into applesauce or served with yogurt and fresh fruit! Some people like to prepare their muesli the night before and have observed that the longer the Gluten-free muesli soaks the sweeter it gets. Please email us your favorite ways to eat our muesli!
Q: Are there any preservatives in Earth Song® products?
A: No. We feel it would be contradictory to put preservatives in such natural products. Therefore, we recommend that the Whole Food Bars be kept cold to protect against spoilage. They can be refrigerated or frozen without impairing flavor. They last up to four to six weeks at room temperature, sometimes longer. They can be refrigerated up to 6 months; frozen up to a year.
